William Parker Quartet jazz, Vermont Jazz Center, Jan 12

The William Parker Quartet will appear at the Vermont Jazz Center on January 12th at 8:00 pm. Parker will be performing with Lewis Barnes, Rob Brown and Hamid Drake in an evening of vibrant, original music. Please note the date change; this concert was originally scheduled for the 19th but was adjusted to allow Parker to inaugurate a jazz festival in Italy.

Imagine the glitter of the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles. Consider the extravagances of architecture, food, and décor, and the flamboyant mode of dress favored by men and women of the French royal court for decades preceding the French Revolution. Music for courtly entertainments followed the fashion of the day, and composers were directed to create festive pieces that suited the royal taste. Cardinals, bishops, and other clergy, princes of the church, were not about to be overshadowed by their secular counterparts. Thus they demanded from their musicians grandiose Baroque compositions that rivaled the splendor of royal events. Florid accompaniments to portions of the Mass and elaborate settings of canticles and humble noëls equaled the grandeur of music performed at court.

5th Annual Chess Open, Williams College, Jan 13

The Williams College Open is a 3-round U.S. Chess Federation rated chess tournament. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the first round is at 10 a.m.. Beatlemania Again, The Colonial Theater, Jan 12

As a huge Beatlefan growing up, I couldn’t let this one go unmentioned. I happened to see the Beatlmania tour in 198mumble, mumble…. This incredible performance features three stages in Beatles history. This show is an entertaining and authentic journey through the history of the world’s greatest band—featuring authentic costuming and musical instruments—and incredible musical reproduction. One night only—don’t miss it!
