The Dazzle of the Royal Court in French Baroque Organ Music
Imagine the glitter of the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles. Consider the extravagances of architecture, food, and décor, and the flamboyant mode of dress favored by men and women of the French royal court for decades preceding the French Revolution. Music for courtly entertainments followed the fashion of the day, and composers were directed to create festive pieces that suited the royal taste. Cardinals, bishops, and other clergy, princes of the church, were not about to be overshadowed by their secular counterparts. Thus they demanded from their musicians grandiose Baroque compositions that rivaled the splendor of royal events. Florid accompaniments to portions of the Mass and elaborate settings of canticles and humble noëls equaled the grandeur of music performed at court.
