The Metropolitan Opera “Live in HD,” Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center, Dec 31 (MA)

December 29, 2007 · Leave a Comment

A special New Year’s Day event. Most fairy tales, though charming on the outside, have darker underpinnings. Alice Coote and Christine Schäfer play the siblings lost in a shadowy world of unknown menace, pursued by the Witch (portrayed by tenor Philip Langridge) who seeks to devour them. The English-language production of Engelbert Humperdinck’s masterful treatment of the beloved story by the Brothers Grimm is the second in the Met’s annual series of special holiday presentations.Running Time: 2 hours, 10 minutes. 1 intermission. Sung in English.

This is a live transmission of a performance at The Metropolitan Opera. Sounds like an excellent idea. We’d love to get tickets and review this show and the experiment itself (hint, hint).

Tickets $23 adults, $21 seniors, $16 students.

New Year’s Day, January 1, 2008, 1 pm LIVE! Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center, Great Barrington, MA. For more information call the box office 413-528-0100.

Bach by popular demand! Another Bach event I couldn’t resist listing, just for that pun. Hardly seems worth it now.

Bach Brandenburg Concerti Nos. 1, 2 and 3 will be featured along with two of the gorgeous and exciting Orchestra Suites – the sensitive and mysterious No. 2 in B minor with divine flutist Judith Mendenhall, and the festive No. 3 in D featuring our star-studded trumpet team of Allan Dean, Neil Mueller and Gerald Serfass. This suite includes the celebrated Air, to be led by phenomenal violinist, Eugene Drucker.
